From Question

Why do you oppose the Republican budget bill that would deregulate dangerous weapons?

Transcript

So we all know that gun violence is out of control in the United States of America, right? Over 120 people are shot and killed every single day. Over 200 people are shot and wounded every single day. And in addition to the toll that this has on the people that are shot and to their friends and their family and their entire communities that are affected by it, it also costs American taxpayers billions of dollars in direct and indirect medical costs, in work loss, in criminal justice and police costs, a whole shebang. It costs us billions. So for many reasons you would think that it's in everyone's best interest to reduce gun violence, right? Apparently not. Apparently not. This administration, instead of investing and trying to make communities healthy and safer, they're really doubling down on this whole guns everywhere at any time for anyone kind of agenda that they have. And they're trying to make it easier and cheaper to buy guns. Yeah. So have you seen what's in the Senate Republicans' reconciliation budget bill? They want to gut the National Firearms Act, which has been in place about 100 years. And they want to do this by deregulating silencers and short-barreled shotguns, short-barreled rifles, and a little category they like to call any other weapon. Hmm. Yeah. So let me get this straight. I want to make sure I have this right. So we're cutting funding for programs that prevent gun violence and support people affected by gun violence. We're removing funding for life-saving research. And we're ripping millions of people's health care away. But we're apparently willing to find the billions that the budget bill is going to cost taxpayers just to make it easier to buy guns? Deregulating silencers alone is going to cost us about $1.5 billion. Make it make sense. There's a reason that the NFA has been in place since 1934. And it's because we recognized back then, way back then, how dangerous it would be to have these kinds of weapons on the streets. So I think that silencers are a bad idea. In what world is it a good idea? The Senate needs to reject this BS budget bill. And if you feel the same way that I do, please text SILENCERS to 64433 so that we can connect you to your Senate member so that you can tell them how you feel.
